Making Money on the Side with Your Own Content: What Works and What Doesn't
Selling your own photos or videos is one of the few side incomes that works with no startup capital, no inventory and no fixed hours. It's also massively oversold. Here's the sober version.
What's realistic
Someone posting regularly and sticking with it usually lands in the low-to-mid hundreds per month after a few months. A few earn more, most earn less, and many stop after four weeks. Rule of thumb: it won't replace a job, but it can cover the utility bills.
What takes the least effort
The easiest content involves no face: feet, hands, clothing, shoes. No studio needed, daylight by a window is enough, a phone will do. Physical items like worn socks or underwear need no equipment either – but they do need shipping and time for the admin.
Time required, honestly
A photo set takes 20–40 minutes including sorting and editing. Then comes the underestimated part: answering enquiries, negotiating prices, organising shipping. Budget three to five hours a week rather than "on the side from my phone".
Staying anonymous is doable
Working without showing your face is entirely normal in this niche and no disadvantage for sales. Three things matter: strip metadata from photos, watch your backgrounds, and use a stage name that can't be traced back. Details are in our guide on starting anonymously.
Who it isn't for
Anyone expecting fast money will be disappointed – the first weeks often bring nothing at all. Anyone without regular time, likewise: irregularity costs you repeat buyers. And anyone who feels uncomfortable with it should skip it; it shows in the content.
The first step
Start with a niche you can already serve, and get listed where buyers search by content rather than by name. On IntimateFind listing is free, there's no commission on your sales, and buyers are sent straight to your own link. Get started here.
