Taxes for Content Creators in Germany: What You Need to Know
Income from content sales is taxable in Germany - regardless of whether it flows through a big platform or directly. An early overview saves a lot of stress later.
Registering a small business (Kleingewerbe)
For most beginners, a "Kleingewerbe" is the simplest path: registering with the local trade office is usually cheap (roughly €20-65) and often done the same day. This avoids the risk of running an unregistered commercial activity.
Small business VAT exemption
If your income stays below the legal threshold, you can use the small-business VAT exemption (§19 UStG in Germany) - this significantly simplifies VAT handling, though you still need to pay income tax on your profit.
Keep your receipts
- All expenses for equipment, costumes, and props are potentially deductible - keep receipts from the start
- Regularly export/archive your payout statements from your platforms instead of searching for them only at tax time
Not a substitute for real advice
This article doesn't replace individual tax advice - especially with higher income or uncertainty, a one-time consultation is usually worth its cost quickly.
